Description

"Orchids in Daylight" is an 18" x 18" x 1/2" marquetry artwork that captures the delicate beauty of orchids and bamboo. The background is crafted from maple, sapele, mahogany, and walnut, while the orchids and bamboo are detailed with dyed maple and walnut. This piece was originally part of a Day and Night set, with "Orchids in Daylight" representing the "Day" aspect. My inspiration for this piece comes from the traditional Japanese Sumi-e style of ink painting, known for its simplicity, elegance, and focus on natural themes.

Sumi-e is a traditional Japanese ink painting technique that emphasizes simplicity, brushstroke economy, and the beauty of nature. It uses black ink, varying the intensity and brush pressure to create delicate and dynamic images. The art form focuses on capturing the essence and spirit of the subject rather than detailed realism. Sumi-e often features subjects such as landscapes, flora, and fauna, embodying the harmony and tranquility found in nature. This influence is evident in the graceful composition and elegant lines of this marquetry artwork.
